Earth Day: We Tried

I know you all come here (or subscribe) to read my behemoth posts but it’s busy season at work, busy season at home and projects are rolling in. So for the next few weeks I regret to say that I will be posting somewhat smaller posts, somewhere in the 500 word range vs my regular 1,000-2,000 word posts 😉 Yea I know you guys miss em

Earth Day

For those of you that don’t know, it’s Earth Day today yesterday. Earth day is all about appreciating the earth and our ecosystem. There are many groups out there that use this day to spread energy conservation ideas and inspire others to be more Earth friendly.

At work it is my week to travel, so if anything gets broken that cannot be fixed remotely I get to jump in the rig and drive, sometimes a few hundred miles to replace or fix IT related equipment. For Earth Day I had planned to make an extra effort to try and do everything from my office, or do the traveling the day before and after, so that at least on Earth Day I wouldn’t be adding to the pollutants in the air.

Well, things didnt quite work out that way. We had some minor emergencies and I actually ended up driving more than I normally do in one day. I had to make a few stops and managed to outsource one of those to a local there so that made me feel slightly better.

So I had to do my part in a different way. We ended up at a soccer game for my wife’s little brother (age 8 ) for a few hours and when the rest of the team departed,  I noticed an opportunity to do my part. They had left some trash from their snacks on the ground.

I decided to get my daughter involved and try to instill the importance of our environment and taking care of it in her when she’s young. Here she is trying to pick up some pieces of trash and putting them in this box also left by the soccer players (shame on them!):

In the end she decided it was more fun to tear the trash into little pieces, so I ended up teaching by example and picked the trash up myself but I still feel like I helped the Earth in a very small way today.

I would be curious to know if any of you did anything special or spectacular on this beautiful Earth Day. If you did, feel free to leave a comment.

Earth day was a beautiful sunny day here in Southern California and I have decided to try a new Earth friendly way of shopping. I have gathered many cloth and canvas bags at different conventions attended throughout the years and never really knew what to do with them. Now I keep them in my car to use as “Green” shopping bags when I go to the store. You can now buy larger ones at stores with some specifically designed to carry frozen foods and such. Kmart has a great LARGE green bag that can carry almost half a shopping cart full of stuff, if it isn't too heavy to tote.

I also found a neat, money saving, advantage to carrying my own bags. Last time I went shopping I recieved one of those store coupons that come with your receipt. It would give me 10% off my next shopping order if used before the end of the month. I usually just lose these or forget to use them before the expiration date, so I usually just throw them away. Apparently on my last shopping trip I forgot to take the reciept and this coupon out of my cloth bag. So this time when I got to the check-out ready to pay I opened my bag and there was the coupon. I handed it to the cashier and got $10 off my purchase. That was a pretty good discout coupon, don't you think.

So remember to carry your own bags to the grocery store, put your coupons in the bag for the next purchase, and happy Money Saving.

Thanks for commenting and sharing that info Dad! I may use it in a future post about grocery shopping and saving.
