Recently I have been thinking about a donation system for my website. This website is about personal finance and frugality and I feel awkward telling people tips on saving money everywhere they can yet asking for donations.
I have come up with a little twist to the system and I think it will be mutually beneficial to all parties. My donation system will be based on the Adopt a Highway program commonly seen across America.
Basically someone will donate a set amount of money to a city to keep a stretch of the highway clean. The money goes toward hiring a cleaning and maintenance crew and also to pay for the sign. The roadside sign displays the doner’s name and logo for all to see. This creates a way of advertising for the company or person and helps keep our roads clean.
So my “Adopt an Information Superhighway” takes that concept to the virtual world and my little stretch of the Information Superhighway.
I am asking for donations to cover the cost of hosting this site and registering the domain name. This way I can keep the site up and running, stay motivated by the fact that people are actually reading my site and also create community interaction. The cost of hosting and registering per year will be divided into weekly portions ($2.10), which ends up being .30 cents per day. In return for this $2.10 donation, you the donor will receive the following*:
- A 5″x1″ banner at the bottom of every post of the week, again with your company or website name on the banner
- Each banner will be a link to your main page or a location on your website you specify
- A very cheap and easy way of advertising your website or company
- A longstanding entry into the “Previously Adopted by” page where your 5″x1″ banner will live forever
- The warm and fuzzy feeling of knowing that you helped out a fellow human being

How this will work:
Click on the button below and you will be taken to Paypal where you can donate. The amount is set and cannot be changed, although the quantity can be changed if you would like more than one week. In the donation process there is a place to give instructions to me. In that area, tell me what you want displayed on the banner and where you want the banners to be linked to. If the notes area does not give you enough room, just put a note that you will email me details and then email me details. The weekly adoption will start the following day after donation, at approximately 12am and will run for seven days.
